I have posted a working paper containing a point-by-point comparative analysis of the statements on “improving Japan-China relations” released simultaneously by Beijing and Tokyo on November 7, 2014. These statements appear to have paved the way for the November 10 summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. I analyze the significance of the differences between the original Chinese- and Japanese-language versions, as well as each government’s (conspicuously different) English translation. Bottom line: appearances can be deceiving!
